MRI aka Tendons Suck


My knee has been stiffening up a bit after some runs, especially after any run at around 5K pace.  So I went to the doc to see what the deal was, hoping he would tell me it was normal and that it was just part of the healing process.....but deep down I knew he wasn't going to say that.

He did an ultrasound and thought he saw some damage at the base of my semitendonosus tendon, but wasn't 100% sure so he sent me in for an MRI.  

It's confirmed.  My semitendonosus hasn't healed yet.  One year later, and I'm still dealing with this injury.  I'm sick of it, and very frustrated with running.  

The tricky part is that it heals by being worked, but not over-worked.  That's a fine line to walk and I've probably been stepping way over that line a lot lately.  So it goes.

The doc offered prolotherapy but I turned it down.  I'd rather do my strengthening exercises and see if it heals that way.  

I go back in 3 months to see if there's been any progress.  Despite possibly working it a little too hard sometimes, it's slowly feeling a little better everyday so I think it might be healing.  But then again, I thought that months ago.

That said....my swimming is still improving and I think the bike is as well.  I have a threshold test and a 1000 yard swim test coming up so I'll find out for sure then.

Galveston is less than 3 weeks away and I have no idea what to expect.  I've never raced a half ironman this early in the year, and I'm having a tough time gauging my fitness.  My swim and bike feel pretty solid, but the run doesn't.

Well....the swim is solid for me.  Compared to others, I still have a ton of work to do. 

No, my doctor doesn't know I have a half ironman in less than 3 weeks.

Sorry to hear you're still struggling with that tendon! It's hard being patient and not overdoing it....

Your final comment re the doc not knowing you're doing a half-ironman soon made me laugh!

Sorry Mike. What kind of run mileage are you able to maintain right now? Part of my injury problem has to be related to trying to get closer to 30 mpw than the 20 I've been doing and adding in track workouts. That coupled with not listening to smarter people telling me not to do that.
